Putting it all Together
Using the research, technology, coursework and prior knowledge I began this project to find a better way to increase reading comprehension while still teaching what I needed to teach. This project is in response to the number of eighth graders who are reading below grade level. I will integrate the lessons into units that include narrative and informational text, Internet searches, videos, pictures and inquiry-based learning. I have chosen lots of different technologies in order to differentiate and help each and every student be successful.
It is my goal to have students gain a deeper understanding through the activation of prior knowledge in a inquiry-based environment. The students will create blogs to track their own learning and make their thinking more transparent.
I have chosen books that are in the Project Gutenberg so that I could have access to the audio books and the text so the students could read and listen on their computers. Because the students sometimes have limited background knowledge it is important to activate what they do have and create experiences for what is lacking. In research that I discovered along the way about online literacy one resounding theme came across, we must teach online literacy. The same tools we use to develop good readers may be relevant to teaching online reading as well. I will be teaching the content, pedagogy and technology together and applying them to both reading and on line reading. The students will use a variety of narrative and expository texts to develop their deep understanding of the topics.
The assessment will let me respond to my intervention and reassess the students every two weeks.
